Parasitosis, or parasite infestation, is a considerably more prevalent health issue in areas that lack adequate sanitation systems or have a high percentage of stray dogs. It is also exacerbated by poor hygiene habits. Many urban slums are high in risk factors for parasitic infections. In those areas where there are insufficient health services and no comprehensive public health prevention strategy, parasite infestation is a major health issue. Chimalhuacán and Los Reyes La Paz, the urban slums where ConeXión Mosaicoworks, both have a high incidence of parasitic infections.
Parasite treatment is especially critical during the early developmental years. When nutrients are adequately absorbed by their bodies, instead of parasites such as helminths and pinworms, children show improved growth and development as well as increased cognitive capacity. Carrying out a parasite treatment campaign can also reduce abdominal pain, diarrhea, lack of appetite, weight loss, poor nutritional absorption, anemia, irritability due to insomnia, skin hyperpigmentation as well as vaginal and rectal irritation, among other problems. Additionally, treatment can prevent parasites from invading the central nervous system, where it is possible for them to cause convulsions.
In April, ConeXión Mosaico donated 20,000 doses of parasite treatment medication to the Chimalhuacán municipal health department. The ProSalud project then worked together with the health authorities to carry out the municipality’s first large-scale parasite treatment campaign. The medicine was administered free of charge in local daycare centers, elementary and middle schools, as well as in public health institutions such as health centers, clinics and hospitals. In addition, ProSalud also administered parasite treatment to the children and families of 2 elementary and one middle school in Los Reyes La Paz.
