In June, ProSalud began offering a new salsa class in Chimalhuacán. Sergio Alva, a nationally recognized salsa instructor and the director/choreographer of the Pasión Ashé dance company, has generously volunteered his time to teach the class. The participants are very enthused and excited to have a professional instructor coming to teach them. New students have arrived each week. Next month, the ProSalud staff will carry out a health diagnostic on interested class participants. Each participant will be weighed and measured, have their Body Mass Index calculated and receive a glucose test. Then, ProSalud will begin working with this new group twice a month. They will begin providing workshops on healthy eating as well as charting the participants’ Body Mass Index and monitoring their glucose levels. This will open the door to providing the participants with nutritional education as well as helping them achieve their healthy weight loss goals.
Dancing is a fun way for people of all ages, shapes and sizes to stay fit. There are many well-known health benefits to dancing, which is an aerobic exercise, including weight loss. Dancing has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease ; increase endurance and motor fitness; and improve muscle tone and strength. Other known benefits include better coordination, agility and flexibility as well as improved balance and spatial awareness. Because physical activity reduces stress and tension, regular dancing also gives an overall sense of well-being. Lastly, dancing is a social activity. Joining a dance class can increase self-confidence. Studies have shown that strong social ties and socializing with friends contribute to high self-esteem and a positive outlook.
In ProSalud, we define community health in a holistic way. We believe that any actions taken to address collective community health must go beyond simply providing access to medical services. Interventions must dynamically involve the community, using the resources they have on hand to transform their lives. By promoting physical activity, improved nutrition and increased emotional well-being, ProSalud is helping slum residents achieve healthier overall lifestyles. This will decrease their risk of more serious health complications in the future. However, the impact goes far beyond the individual level. Slum communities are often characterized by mistrust and a lack of relationships between neighbors.
